Lot Essay

Superbe masque mendé figurant un visage exprimant la moue et surmonté d’une coiffure architecturée, constituée d’un serpent enroulé autour d’une structure évoquant une couronne royale. Des bourrelets sont figurés autour du cou. Voir Phillips (R. B., Representing Woman, Sande Masquerades of the Mende of Sierra Leone, Los Angeles, 1995, fig.6.27ab) pour un masque comparable. D’après son iconographie, l’auteur précise qu’il proviendrait de la partie orientale du territoire mendé.
