Lot Essay

Ce type de sculpture surmontant un poteau servait à l’origine à marquer les tombes des notables les plus importants. Cette coutume était relativement répandue dans la région puisqu’on la retrouve chez les Kwere, Zaramo, Luguru, Ngulu, Zigua, Digo et Doë. Felix (1990) date cette œuvre du premier quart du XX° siècle. Bien qu’en partie érodée, cette sculpture expressive est l’un des rares témoignages de la production artistique en bois de Tanzanie.
