Lot Essay

The Flower Girl; Two Women is a work of 1911 and relates to a number of paintings of two women wearing coster straw boater hats painted at that time, such as Two Women (Harris Museum and Art Gallery, Preston) and Mother and Daughter: Lou Lou I Love You (private collection) (see W. Baron, Sickert Paintings and Drawings, New Haven and London, 2006, p. 380, nos 366 and 368). The same model appears to be depicted in these paintings, and on 12 December 1911 The Pall Mall Gazette described Louie as a 'character study of two East End ladies' (W. Baron, ibid).
