Lot Essay

A small group of approximately fourteen near identical figures are in the Brown University Collection, Providence, Rhode Island (formerly the property of Ms. Anne S.K. Brown). One of the Brown University figures retains a small flag placed in a hole in the top of its shako, a feature shared with a number of the present figures that have similarly placed holes which must originally have been intended for miniature unit standards.

A very similar set representing the 22nd (Corsican) Light Infantry, who Bonaparte had served with in 1792, was given by the Emperor and Empress Marie-Louise to their son, Napoléon Francois Charles Joseph Bonaparte, the King of Rome, in 1812. See Jean Nicollier, Collecting Toy Soldiers, Charles E. Tuttle 7 Co., 1968.
