Lot Essay

Accompanied by a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch with silvery opaline-white dial and rose gold indexes in 1993 and its subsequent sale on April 15th of the same year. Further accompanied by a Patek Philippe Certificate of Origin dated 5 April 1994, additional solid case back, setting pin, product literature, Patek Philippe leather envelope, Patek Philippe presentation box, outer packaging and tie-tag.

Patek Philippe's celebrated reference 3970 was launched in 1986 and replaced reference 2499. The first generation was fitted with snap on case backs. Around 1989, the model was modified to a water-resistant version with screw back and was delivered with an additional sapphire crystal display back, such as the present watch. Reference 3970 remained in production until 2004 when it was replaced by reference 5970.

Offered fresh to the market, this reference 3970ER is preserved in excellent condition and still retains its perfectly harmonized proportions. It represents a wonderful opportunity to purchase a representative of this iconic model with all accessories, and even the deployant buckle with oval Patek Philippe clasp that is correct for a late series example such as the present watch.

The model is illustrated in Patek Philippe Wristwatches by Martin Huber & Alan Banbery, second edition, p. 305.
