Lot Essay

Mrs. Thatcher wore this suit for a series of portraits photographs taken by Norman Parkinson in 1981, two of which are held in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London (see following lot). The suit is typical of the kind of well tailored business suits made by François Neckar for Britain’s first female Prime Minister at the beginning of her time in office. At around the same time Mrs. Thatcher was also photographed entering number 10 Downing Street wearing this suit, with her grey Asprey handbag over her arm (see preceding lot), on that occasion she was wearing the second coordinating blouse sold with this lot (not illustrated).
