Lot Essay

John Warrington Wood (1839-1886) who was born John Wood, adopted the name of his home town as his middle name in order to distinguish himself from the elder sculptor also named John Wood. After training as a stone mason, he moved to Rome in 1861 where he spent most of his career. He specialised in portrait busts as well as mythological and biblical subjects, Wood exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1868 and 1874. Amongst his better known works are the figures of Michelangelo and Raphael which stand at the entrance of the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
