Lot Essay

'Striped cats rank with Mascot cats as Wain 'pedigrees' of capricious cheer and inventive flair. They also had their genesis in the early days of the Annuals and were perfected later to star in postcards by Raphael Tuck in their 'Stripes to the Front' series in about 1916, and in a series by Solomon Brothers in 1914, where patriotic World War One soldier cats wear their amended stripes in Union Jack motifs.' (C. Beetles, Louis Wain's CATS, 2011.)
