This table forms part of a group of nearly identical design attributed to the workshop of William Riddell, 16 Nottingham Place, Whitechapel Road, as two bear the stamp ‘W. RIDDELL’. An identical table is illustrated in Ronald Phillips, Antique English Furniture 2013, no. 50, pp. 132-133. One stamped example is illustrated in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, 1996, p. 390, fig 767 and the other was also with Ronald Phillips (Antique English Furniture 2015, no. 54, pp. 156-157). A further table in the group formed part of the 1929 loan exhibition at Lansdowne House, London (Illustrated Catalogue of the Loan Exhibition of English Decorative Art at Lansdowne House, 17-28 February 1929, pl. CI). The initials PL presumably identify a journeyman in Riddell’s workshop.
