Title-page with engraved vignette, 51 engraved double-page maps hand-colored by a contemporary hand, 8 letterpress tables, 2 hand-colored, and 2 engraved plates, all mounted on guards (Some minor marginal darkening.) Contemporary quarter morocco and boards, uncut (rebacked, old spine laid down, corners repaired, some rubbing).
FIRST EDITION. Buchon's version of Carey and Lea's important American Atlas, first published in Philadelphia in 1822 with 46 maps. The atlas comprises 34 maps of North America, most of individual states, including Washington D.C., and 17 maps of Central and South America and the West Indies. The majority of the maps are set within explanatory letterpress text borders. Phillips Atlases 1176; Wheat Transmississippi West 348.
