FIRST EDITION of Schall von Bell’s account as a mission to China from 1619 to 1666. “‘Essentially an account of the mission in Peking and of the author's experiences at court ... It does not pretend to be a general description of China or even of the Ch'ing dynasty, although much can be learned from it about society and learning, about the Manchu conquest, and especially about the workings of government and life in Peking under the first Ch'ing emperors’ (Lach III p. 1677). It is listed by Sommervogel under J. Foresi as the Jesuit responsible for preparing the book for publication” (Quaritch Cat. 1226 no. 204). Cordier Sinica I, 821; De Backer & Sommervogel III, 877, n. 3; Streit V: 2323. Not in Lust.
