2° (332 x 224 mm). Engraved title and one plate (both folded along top and fore-margins with one small split to the title). (Small marginal hole in Aaa, browned.) 19th-century russia, crest and initials of Henri Ternaux-Copans on front covers, spine gilt (spine sunned, some rubbing). Provenance: Guglielmo Libri (1803-1869, his sale February 1849, lot 191, purchased by Rodd for:) Sir Thomas Phillipps (inscribed MHC and with pressmark); Henri Ternaux-Copans (1807-1864), French historian, author of numerous works on the exploration of the Americas (binding); Lionel Robinson (his sale Sotheby’s London, 26 June 1986, lot 300).
FIRST EDITION. This is the earliest work to mention use by Indians of cinchona, “Peruvian” or “Fever” bark, for treatment of fever (Alden & Landis). Cinchona, also known as “Jesuits' bark,” is the source of quinine. The plates were engraved oversize for the text, and are normally cropped. They are here folded at top and the right side to preserve as much of the full image as possible. “It frequently lacks either or both the engraved title and the engraved plate of the Martyrdom of Fr. Diego Ortiz at p. 782. Each is substantially larger than the volume itself and (particularly the martyrdom plate) may not have been included in all copies; when present, as in this copy the half-inch or more extension on all sides is chipped or damaged. These engravings are superb examples of the work of the famous Flemish artist, Petrus de Jode. The engraved title has a richly designed border depicting scenes of the Augustinian missionaries among the Indians of Peru, preaching, baptising, reaping, etc. The extraordinary plate of the martyrdom of Fr. Ortiz shows his torture and death by impalement. Each, while cracked and chipped on the protruding portion, is complete to plate mark except for about a square inch in the upper right-hand corner. Most of the recorded copies lack the martyrdom plate, i.e., Medina, Leclerc, Palau, and (apparently) Sabin, who mentions it” (Lathrop C. Harper, 1970, catalogue 200, item 145).
The author was a native of Peru, born in Chuquisaca in 1584. His chronicle embraces the history of the Augustinian Order in South America from its foundation in 1551, and the establishment of monasteries in Peru, Ecuador, New Granada and Chile. EXCEEDINGLY RARE: this is the only copy to appear at auction in at least 100 years according to the online databases.
