Contemporary French calf, the arms of Jean-François-Paul Le Fèvre de Caumartin [Olivier 652, fer 1] at center of both covers (joints and corners repaired). Provenance: Jean-Francois-Paul le Fevre de Caumartin, Bishop of Blois (1668-1732; binding, presentation inscription, bookplate); Marquis de Balleroy (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, with ex dono inscription on the front flyleaf. Louis-Urbain le Fevre de Caumartin rose to become a conseiller d'Etat in 1697; his son Jean-Francois-Paul was Bishop of Blois and a keen bibliophile, who enlarged the family library to over 9000 volumes by the time of his death in 1732. This work was continued by Jean de La Barre under the title Histoire universelle, depuis l'an 800 de Notre Seigneur jusqu'a l'an 1700 inclusivement. Paris, 1703. Cioranescu XVII, 14031.
