Contemporary French red morocco gilt, triple-fillet border on each cover surrounding the central arms of Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet, spine in six compartments with five raised bands, gilt-lettered in one, decorated in the remaining, edges gilt. Provenance: Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet (binding).

THE AUTHOR’S COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, finely bound with his arms. Court preacher to Louis XIV of France, Bossuet was a strong advocate of political absolutism and the divine right of kings. Cioranescu XVII, 14132; Tchemerzine II, p. 371.
