PROBABLY QAZVIN, SAFAVID IRAN, FIRST HALF 16TH CENTURY
An illustration from the Shahnama of Firdawsi, opaque pigments heightened with gold on paper, Rustam dressed in blue tunic with gold turban strikes the head of a white elephant in bridle with a demon-headed axe, beyond is a palace with baked brick and tile decoration and a walled garden with one of the double doors ajar, laid down between blue and pink borders and polychrome rules on wide card mount, some flaking and minor repainting
