AN INTRICATELY CARVED DARKWOOD TRAVELLING WRITING SLOPE
GALLE DISTRICT, SRI LANKA, 19TH CENTURY
Of rectangular form with flat top, the deeply carved floral decoration consisting of elegant scrollwork bearing oversized leaves, lotus buds and flowerheads, the lid opening to reveal compartments, a cylindrical ivory inlaid ruler and a hinged slope, the interior's ivory-inlaid decoration of dotted rosettes and scrollwork arranged around a central medallion inhabited by an elephant on a lotiform base
