ANGLO-AMERICAN COMMITTEE OF INQUIRY
A Survey of Palestine. [Jerusalem:] Government Printer, 1946-1947. 4 text-volumes, including Supplement to Survey of Palestine prepared for the later United Nations Special Committee on Palestine (UNSCOP), 8° (230 x 152mm), and slipcase of maps, 4° (274 x 207mm). Errata slip in vol. I, 10 folding maps, all but one colour-printed, extra-illustrated with an additional folding colour-printed map 'Palestine of the Old Testament'. (Occasional insignificant spotting, a few leaves lightly dogeared.) Text-vols in original blue printed wrappers, matching glazed-paper covered slipcase (wrappers to vol. II spotted, extremities lightly rubbed with tiny nicks and splits more noticeable on backstrips, head of spine of vol. III defective and with covers creased, Supplement in near-fine condition, map slipcase lightly rubbed with occasional faint staining). Provenance: map 6 with some markings in blue pencil, vols I-II with some underlining and markings in red pencil.
COMPLETE SET WITH THE VERY RARE MAPS. In the 1920s and 1930s, British government commissions to Palestine had received various background materials of a geographic nature in order to help the commissions to understand the country they were examining. The AAC received the present lot which is extremely comprehensive, covering all aspects of the Mandatory territory. After the failure of the AAC, this survey was re-used for UNSCOP, and an additional Supplement for that Committee was published as a continuation, and is present here. Very few copies of this survey are found complete with the maps. Khalidi & Khadduri 1699 (calling for 2 vols only, with no mention of the maps).
