A PAIR OF SILVER CRANE CANDLESTICKS
TONGZHI INCISED SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1862-1874)
Each candlestick is superbly modelled as a crane standing on an elaborate gilt-silver rock-form base, from which emerge floral blossoms inlaid with semi-precious stones. The cranes are naturalistically detailed, standing on tall legs detailed with cylindrical bands, with one leg slightly bent, and their long necks gracefully curved. Each crane further grasps a peach sprig in its long pointed beak, the stem forming a pricket candlestick. The bodies and feathers are intricately and realistically rendered, with their wings forming a cover for the hollow body.
24 in. (61 cm.) high, boxes
