[IRISH PROVERBS]. BAILEY, Karen. Irish Proverbs. San Francisco: Chronicle Books: 1986. Illustrated. Original pictorial boards; original pictorial dust-jacket.
FIRST EDITION. Reagan was proud of his Irish ancestry; his great-great-grandfather, Michael O’Regan emigrated from County Tipperary in the 1840’s. In 1984, Reagan visited the Irish village of Ballyporeen, where he and his team came across Farrell’s Pub, owned by John and Mary O’Farrell, part of which the owners had named “The Ronald Reagan.” This discovery caused Reagan to thereafter quip: “John Kennedy got an airport, Lyndon Johnson got a space center, but I got a pub named after me.” In 2004, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Reagan Foundation visited Ireland again, and upon visiting the pub, found it was closed, and the fixtures for sale. He purchased all the fixtures, which have been reassembled in the Air Force One Pavilion at the Reagan Library.
