A SMALL ZITAN AND MARBLE TABLE SCREEN, XIAOZUOPINGFENG ZITAN STAND, 18TH CENTURY
The dark grey markings in the rectangular screen suggest a tall tree without branches standing alone before a mist-enshrouded waterfall. A four-character inscription, bai chi wu zhi (one hundred chi, no branches), is carved in seal script in the upper right corner. The 18th century zitan stand has a narrow oblong opening in the panel between the screen and aprons below, and the side posts are flanked by vase-shaped spandrels. The wood has a warm, original patina.
9 ¾ in. (24.6 cm.) high, 5 ½ in. (14 cm.) wide

The inscription is a classic phrase used to describe a tree that is rare, tall and large, and, as it has no branches, is useful as timber. A chi is a measurement that corresponds to approximately 30 cm.
