Lot Essay

Like the preceding rectangular tray, the white marble of this tray has a luminous, creamy texture. The begonia or haitan shape is a popular shape in Chinese decorative arts and lends itself very well for use as a tray. A junyao tray of this shape, of related size (23 cm. wide), is illustrated in Yuzhou Official Junyao Kiln Site Museum Exhibition Catalogue, vol. I, 2012, p. 213, where it is dated to the Jin dynasty (1115-1234). Unlike the present tray, the junyao example has an everted rim.
