Lot Essay

With a strong emphasis on process, Nathan Hylden’s work is underpinned by a fascination with serial repetition. Untitled (NH4508) is part of a larger series of linens produced in 2008 and stenciled with the same black pattern. Each work, however, is marked by minor degrees of variation: some show the print in greater density, whilst in others the pattern is sparse. The subtle differences between each linen, created by varying the application of stencil, serve as evidence of the artist's hand in what otherwise appears a mechanical process. Hylden’s work addresses the very nature of art- making; by taking the process as subject, the artwork becomes a document of its own creation.
