Lot Essay

Launched in 1956, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date was the first self-winding waterproof wristwatch to display the date and day of the week.

Nicknamed “President”, as prominent government leaders, entrepreneurs and celebrities started wearing the model on a regular basis, the Day-Date, throughout the years became one of the most successful and popular wristwatches ever made.
Introduced in 1977, reference 18000 showcased innovations within the Day-Date line. The reference embodied the division between models crafted with the Plexiglas crystal and the highly resistant sapphire crystal. The model was now assembled with an improved screw down crown and case back, enhancing the waterproof abilities of the model to 100 meters. Caliber 1556 used on previous models gave way to caliber 3055 with quick-set date.

In order to meet the demands of their clients, Rolex created various versions of the Day-Date, with examples adorned with precious stones, lacquered or stone dials, which are now highly sought after by the most astute collectors.

In excellent overall condition, the present wristwatch is crafted in an 18k gold case and features a highly attractive onyx dial. Due to the complexity of assembling wristwatches hard-stone dials, many examples encompass hairline cracks after being fitted to a watch case, or following shocks due to wear. In intact condition, the present dial enhances the overall appeal of the present Day-Date, making it a stunning example for collectors.
