Lot Essay

Unique in many aspects, the Opus 9 marked the first time Harry Winston partnered with two independent watchmakers. Using diamonds and rubies, the Opus 9 is the first timepiece of the celebrated series to use precious stones with the main purpose of telling time.

Instead of traditional watch hands and a cyclical dial, time is reduced to its most fundamental expression to show the hours and minutes by two parallel chains of 33 baguette-cut diamonds, punctuated with three mandarin garnets to indicate the exact time. The main technical challenge came from the added weight of the diamonds when engineering these chains. Each diamond and garnet had to be cut to watchmaking precision to fit in the links, in fact, 50 diamonds initially received by Wiederrech from Harry Winston had to be sent back.

The white gold case of the timepiece designed by Eric Giroud displays a minimalist and sophisticated design, emphasizing the beauty and brilliance of the diamonds, while supporting the movement which was totally concealed in the case.
Representing a journey of collaboration, innovation and creativity, the present wristwatch is number 42 of a limited of 100 pieces only and is furthermore offered in ‘Like New’ overall condition.
