Lot Essay

As one of the most well-regarded contemporary painters of Vietnam, Nguyen Trung painted in his early days abstract compositions that balances the rationalism of European art and the philosophical nature of Oriental art, before moving towards painting his iconic works of ladies in the garden.

The artist's mature body of works spans more than 30 years. The present work, highly romantic and meditative in nature, advances the tradition of romanticism in Vietnamese art, beginning from the esteemed generation of Le Pho and Mai Trung Thu,  and continuing on with Nguyen Trung.
