Château Ausone 1978
Saint-Emilion, 1er grand cru classé (A)
Slightly bin-soiled and slightly creased labels. Levels top-shoulder or better
Tasting note: Another distinctive and idiosyncratic wine. ‘Dried leaves’, swingeingly tannic and lean in the mid-1990s. Last tasted at a rare enough Ausone vertical, in magnums: medium-deep, open, mature amber rim; nose fully evolved, sweet, harmonious, floral; sweet and easy on the palate, drinking well despite showing age. A good ’78. Last tasted January 2005 **** MB.
