The brown leather-lined top with a swag-carved edge above a frieze of four drawers and four false drawers, the pedestals each with three drawers and cupboards all with applied rocaille scrolls and divided by pilasters headed by shells, on foliate-carved plinths, stamped 'H.SAMUEL / 484 OXFORD STREET / LONDON'

This pattern of desk appears to have been a house speciality of the dealer H.Samuel; another also stamped is illustrated in C. Gilbert, Marked London Furniture, Leeds, 1996, p. 395, pl. 780, and p. 47, and a third example was sold anonymously Christie's, London, 21 November 2006, lot 457 (£19,200 including premium).
