Lot Essay

Nicolas-Jean Marchand (1697-1757) received his maîtrise before 1738. A similar commode by Marchand is the the Musée Carnavalet, Paris. Marchand is best known for his use of lacquer, working with Gilles Joubert (1689-1775) who supplied furniture to Louis XV, most notably a pair of petit commodes for château de Fontainebleau, now in the Wallace Collection, London.

S & H Jewell were recorded as cabinet-makers between 1830-1840 based in the Holborn, London, but a billhead for furniture supplied to Standen House, East Grinstead, Sussex reveals that the firm continued to operate at the end of the 19th Century.
