The fish was an important symbol in early Christian art; Augustine of Hippo explained that this was because the Greek word for fish, ichthys, was an acrostic for 'Iēsous Christos, Theou Yios, Sōtēr', which translates as 'Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour'.
