Pour commémorer le centenaire du sculpteur Rembrandt Bugatti (1884-1916) Christie’s Paris, présente aux enchères publiques internationales dix sept sculptures en bronze ou marbre : plusieurs félins, des oiseaux, un groupe de yacks, un éléphant et trois gazelles, un cerf bramant, un chien couché, trois femmes ; toutes éditées par l’un des plus grands fondeurs de tous les temps : Adrien Aurélien Hébrard.Dès le début, Rembrandt Bugatti, fils du créateur Carlo Bugatti et frère du célèbre constructeur automobile Ettore Bugatti, va fixer les bases de toute son oeuvre : un engagement existentiel marginal à la recherche d’un idéal de perfection, un dialogue intense entre lui et ses modèles, un face à face permanent. Bugatti a choisi le modelage à main libre sans repère ni mesure, sans esquisse préparatoire, la voie la plus spontanée, la plus primitive et la plus forte pour traduire la nature, le vivant, en trois dimensions. Pendant ses quinze années de création ininterrompue, exécutée dans l’ivresse, au pas de course, dans la plus grande solitude, jusqu’à l’épuisement, jusqu’à son suicide à l’âge de 32 ans, Bugatti va créer une oeuvre unique, puissante et dynamique, universelle et intemporelle, authentique, telle que définie par Walter Benjamin : “ce qui fait l’authenticité d’une chose est tout ce qu’elle contient de transmissible de par son origine, de sa durée matérielle à son pouvoir de témoignage historique”. Capter l’animal, transmettre l’affection qu’il lui porte, procurait à Bugatti un bonheur profond. Tant et si bien qu’avec les années sa vision de l’animal évoluera :d’une saisie extrêmement rapide, fougueuse et directe des formes, des sonorités, des attitudes, des caractères, des mouvements dans toute leur richesse sensorielle, elle aboutira à une finalité très structurée, eurythmique, synthétique, à la fois précise et complexe.La série des félins, celle des cervidés et celle des oiseaux qu’il a modelés pendant dix ans entre le Jardin des Plantes, à Paris, et le Jardin zoologique d’Anvers, en est la plus parfaite expression Cet ensemble de collections, réunies en une seule pour le centenaire par Christie’s Paris, couvre tout le champ créatif de Rembrandt Bugatti de par la diversité stylistique des modèles proposés et de par leurs provenances exceptionnelles : Rembrandt Bugatti a vingt ans quand il rencontre son éditeur et marchand d’art Adrien Aurélien Hébrard. Dans l’introduction de son premier catalogue d’exposition en 1904 Hébrard écrira : “Ce fut d’abord la méfiance que m’inspira ce joli nom ronflant, évocateur de trop de gloire et de trop d’art, alors qu’un ami m’engageait vivement à voir les travaux du jeune artiste. Au lieu du petit Italien adroit de ses mains je trouvais un véritable artiste. Il m’arrive trop rarement de trouver un artiste sincère et personnel pour que ce ne soit pas une joie pour moi de le faire connaître au public”. Chaque année Hébrard exposera les nouvelles oeuvres de Bugatti dans sa galerie rue Royale à Paris. Tous les cinq ans il organise une rétrospective et le présente dans tous les Salons officiels français ou étrangers de l’époque, entre Paris, Venise, Milan, Bruxelles, Berlin, Anvers, New York. C’est ainsi que vont se créer tout au long du XXe siècle les collections et les collectionneurs de Rembrandt Bugatti : René Dubois à Paris, associé de la fonderie Hébrard, que Bugatti considérait comme son père adoptif, fut l’un des tous premiers (Braque couché ou grand Saint Germain, dédicacé “al mio buon padre addotivo Sign. Dubois suo figlio”) ; M. André Taponier à Paris, photographe et portraitiste de Rembrandt Bugatti (Panthère jouant avec une boule) ; Le comte Vincenzo Florio à Palerme, grand industriel viticole, créateur de la course automobile Targa Florio, ami de la famille Bugatti (Les Panthères, l’une se léchant la patte, l’autre au repos) ; M. Hébrard à Paris,père du fondeur, directeur du journal Le Temps (Femme au bas) ; M. Paul Lederlin, industriel du textile dans les Vosges et Sénateur (Jeune Fille) ; M. Hollande (Couple de Yacks au repos) ; M. Ettore Seib, industriel à Strasbourg (Jaguar accroupi) ; M. Hermann Ditisheim, industriel dans les Vosges (Petite Panthère assise) ; Madame Galop (Cerf bramant) ; Madame Baron-Supervielle à Buenos Aires (Deux grands léopards) ; La Galerie A.-A. Hébrard à Paris, ayant créé et composé la plus importante collection de Rembrandt Bugatti au XXe siècle (Femme à genoux ou Le Réveil, Éléphant d’Afrique et trois gazelles, Pélican en conversation, Cigogne au repos, Flamant en marche). Le modèle Vautour, une aile déployée fut offert en 1922 à Marc de Molènes, brillant avocat à la Cour d’Appel de Paris et homme politique engagé. Aujourd’hui, en Novembre 2016, ce modèle fait parti de la prestigieuse “Collection Alain Delon”.VERONIQUE FROMANGERRembrandt Bugatti-Répertoire monographique 20161884Rembrandt nait à Milan le 16 octobre de l’union de Carlo Bugatti et Thérèse Lorioli. Il est leur troisième enfant après Deanice, née 4 ans auparavant et Ettore, de trois ans son aîné. C’est son oncle, le peintre Giovanni Segantini, qui a choisi son prénom mais sa famille le surnommera Pempa. Rembrandt aide son père dans son atelier, 13 via Marcona.1899Carlo trouve, cachée dans son atelier, la sculpture d'un paysan conduisant quatre vaches : c’est la première œuvre de Rembrandt.1903Première exposition à la Biennale de Venise. Bientôt Rembrandt expose à Turin et à Milan. La famille déménage à Paris, rue Jeanne d’Arc, dans le 13e arrondissement. Rembrandt travaille au Jardin des Plantes et devient membre de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts.1904Il rencontre Adrien-Aurélien Hébrard, fondeur, éditeur et marchand d'art, et fait sa première exposition dans sa galerie, 8 rue Royale, à Paris. À l'approche de la guerre, en août, les animaux dangereux du zoo d’Anvers sont sacrifiés pour transformer le lieu en hôpital de guerre. The subjects, in bronze and in marble, include several big cats, birds, a group of yaks, an elephant and three gazelles, a roaring deer, a resting dog, and three female fgures – all cast by one of the greatest founders of all time, Adrien Aurélien Hébrard. From the very outset, Rembrandt Bugatti, son of artistdesigner Carlo Bugatti and brother of the celebrated car designer Ettore Bugatti, established the basis of his entire oeuvre – his solitary, existential, committed pursuit of an ideal through his intense engagement and constant confrontation with his subjects. Bugatti chose to model directly with his hands, without recourse to any reference documents or measurements, without preparatory sketches, choosing the path of spontaneity, the most basic and powerful means to translate nature – life itself – into his three-dimensional works.Through his ffteen years of unbroken creativity, pursued with an urgent intoxication, lost in his total solitude, to the point of exhaustion, until his suicide at the age of thirty-two, Bugatti was to create a unique body of work – powerful, dynamic, universal, timeless, and authentic as defned by Walter Benjamin: ‘The authenticity of a thing is the essence of all that is transmissible from its beginning, ranging from its substantive duration to the testimony to the history which it has experienced.’ Capturing the essence of the animal and conveying his afection for his subject were for Bugatti a source of profound joy. This depth of emotion can be traced through the evolution of his vision over the years. From his initial, swift fery, and direct rendering of shapes, resonances, attitudes, character, gestures in their full sensual subtlety, his style was distilled into something more structured, rhythmic, and stylised, at once precise and complex.The series of big cats, his deer, and his birds, sculpted over a decade at the Jardin des plantes in Paris and the Jardin zoologique in Antwerp, provide the perfect illustration of this destiny.The present, unique assembly of collections, brought together by Christie’s, Paris, embraces every aspect of Rembrandt Bugatti’s creativity, both in the stylistic range of the subjects and in the story told by their exceptional provenances. Rembrandt Bugatti was twenty when he met his founder and dealer, Adrien Aurélien Hébrard. In his introduction to his artist’s frst exhibition catalogue in 1904, Hébrard wrote: ‘My frst reaction to this sonorous name, evocative of an excess of glory and artfulness, was one of wariness, though a friend was pressing me to view the young artist’s works. Instead of the manually accomplished young Italian I was expecting, I encountered a true artist. All too rarely do I discover a sincere and appealing artist whose promotion can give me such delight.’ Every year, Hébrard exhibited Bugatti’s new works in his gallery on the rue Royale, Paris. Every fve years, he organised a retrospective and toured this between the oficial French and foreign Salons of the day, in Venice, Milan, Brussels, Berlin, Antwerp, and New York. This established the context in which collectors of Rembrandt Bugatti were inspired through the 20th century. Among the frst of these collectors was René Dubois, Paris, an associate in the Hébrard foundry, regarded by Bugatti as a surrogate father, (Braque couché ou grand Saint Germain, dedicated ‘al mio buon padre addotivo Sign. Hébrard, Paris, the founder’s father, director of the newspaper Le Temps (Femme au bas); M. Paul Lederlin, textile manufacturer in the Vosges and member of the Sénat (Jeune Fille); M. Hollande (Couple de Yacks au repos); M. Ettore Seib, Strasburg, industrialist (Jaguar accroupi); M. He is their third child, after Deanice, born 4 years earlier, and Ettore, 3 years his senior. It was his uncle, the painter Giovanni Segantini, who chose his given name but the family nickname him ‘Pempa’. Rembrandt helps his father in his studio, 13 via Marcona.1899Carlo fnds in his studio a sculpture representing a peasant, driving four cows: it would be Rembrandt’s frst piece.1903First exhibition at the Venice Biennial. Soon after, Rembrandt showcases his sculptures in Turin and Milan. The family moves to Paris, rue Jeanne d’Arc, in the 13th arrondissement. Rembrandt works from the Jardin des Plantes (botanic gardens) and becomes a member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts (National Society of the Fine Arts).1904He meets Adrien-Aurélien Hébrard, founder, publisher and art dealer, and has his frst exhibition in his gallery, 8 rue Royale, Paris. He is under contract and, for the frst time, presents his work at the Salon de la Société des Beaux-Arts (Society of Fine Arts).1905First exhibition at the Salon d’Automne.1906He is awarded the Grand Prize for sculpture in Milan.1907He moves to Belgium and settles in Antwerp. He works in the zoo, the largest in Europe at the time. In Paris, He partakes in a grand exhibition of Italian Art, held at the Serres de l’Alma. A frst monograph is devoted to his work, written by his friend and art critic: Rossi-Sacchetti.1908He goes back to Paris for several months.1909-1910A major exhibition is held in the Marble Hall of the Antwerp Royal Zoological Society, from May 15th to June 10th, 1910.1911The Galerie A.-A. Hébrard holds a major retrospective exhibition. Rembrandt is awarded the Legion of Honour.1914In June, Hébrard arranges for Rembrandt’s frst solo exhibition in the United States, at the Goupil Gallery, New York. Fifty-one numbered casts of this model are known to exist. One example is part of the collections of the Mullin Automotive Museum, California, United States of America. The great French industrialist, Ettore Seib, acquired the present lot as well as a Grand Tigre Royal directly from the Hébrard foundry in Paris in 1920. The latter was sold at Christie’s New York on 9 November 2000 (lot 202).
