Lot Essay

The Flight into Egypt is after an etching by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo (1727-1804), Mary holding the Child in her arms and Joseph with the basket, part of his set of 27 etchings entitled Picturesque Ideas on the Flight into Egypt, first published in 1753. Hodges was elected as a member of the Royal Academy in 1787, and so the signature of Hagar and Ishmael suggests that it must date from the last decade of his life.
