The figure on this menu design is that of Beatrice Goelet (1885-1902), the daughter of property magnate Robert Goelet (1845-1895) and his wife Harriet Louise, whom Sargent had painted in 1877. Sargent painted Beatrice, aged five, in 1890, and the present drawing is a caricature of that work, with the same pose and grand dress. Another version of the drawing is in the Archives of American Art, Washington, D.C.
