Lot Essay

The present lot, consigned from the estate of the original owners, stems from a true love story that was founded in the Art Deco period. The couple pictured, Miss Josephine '(Fifi)' Widener and Mr. Milton 'Doc' Holden, were married in Philadelphia in 1923. This wedding can be said to have been a momentous occasion for the couple as well as all those that knew them as the accompanying letter states, "Although the wedding plans are shrouded in secrecy, it is known the ceremony will be attended by prominent society folk from all parts of the East." This attractive and well preserved Cartier clock, given from father to daughter on her wedding day, has been set on the mantle piece of the family from the days of the roaring 20s, holding memories of love and companionship ever since.
