First edition of Blair’s “most outstanding work” (Henrey II p.48). The Royal Society granted Blair license to publish Botanick Essays on 22 October 1719, when Sir Isaac Newton (the dedicatee of this work) held the Presidential Chair; it was likely published in 1719, though the title-page bears the date 1720.
8vo (192 x 117 mm). 5 engraved folding plates. (A few leaves and plates with light browning or staining.) Contemporary English blind-paneled calf (rebacked). Provenance: John Earl of Bute (armorial bookplate on verso of title-page); numerous notes and emendations in an early hand. ESTC T81025; Henrey 456.
“Pulteney considered that the publication of Botanick essays, in which Blair expounded the then new view as to the sexual characters of plants, contributed greatly to the extension of the knowledge and the confirmation of the truth of this matter in England” (Henrey II p.48).
