LOGAN, James (1674-1751). Experimenta et meletemata de plantarum generatione. Experiments and Considerations on the Generation of Plants. Translated by John Fothergill. London: C. Davis, 1747.

First edition in English, presentation copy inscribed to Humphry Marshall, of this “important early work on the fertilization of plants” (Hunt). Logan served as governor of Pennsylvania for two years, and may well have become a notable botanist had he followed a scientific, rather than political, path. Humphry Marshall, a Pennsylvania Quaker and botanist, has been called the “father of American dendrology.” His cousins, John and William Bartram, provided James Fothergill (the translator of this work) with American plants for his botanical garden at Upton, near Stratford. An important association copy linking several early American Quaker botanists.

8vo (205 x 132 mm). (Some light staining.) Original blue wrappers ink-lettered on front wrapper (a few tears with small losses). Provenance: Humphry Marshall (1722-1801), American botanist (presentation inscription from the author in the recipient’s hand on title-page); Caleb Marshall (ownership inscription dated November 16th 1834? on front wrapper). Hunt 529; Pritzel 5582; Sabin 41796.
