[CRANE, Stephen (1871-1900)]. Maggie A Girl of the Streets (A Story of New York). [New York, 1893].

First edition of the author's rare first book, which he had printed in an edition of 1100 copies, most of which he used as kindling when the copies failed to sell. The present copy appears to be one of a small cache of Crane family copies that surfaced at auction in the 1930s. Approximately 38 copies are recorded (Joseph Katz, "Maggie... A Census," Stephen Crane Newsletter, no. 203, 1967-1969, and an unpublished continuation). Despite the pale internal stain, actually a fine, crisp copy for this book

8vo. (Pale purple stain in lower margins.) Original yellow printed wrappers, uncut (short tear on rear wrapper, small repair at foot of spine); cloth folding case. BAL 4068.
