[HAWTHORNE, Nathaniel (1804-1864)]. Fanshawe, A Tale. Boston: Putnam and Hunt for Marsh and Capen, 1828.
Exceedingly scarce first edition of Hawthorne’s first book, published anonymously at his own expense soon after his graduation from Bowdoin College. Few copies sold and Hawthorne repudiated the work, destroyed all unsold copies and all those that he could subsequently recover. “Probably the finest copy known” (Cortlandt F. Bishop catalogue)
8vo (190 x 119 mm). (Some pale dampstaining at end.) Original purple muslin-backed boards, printed paper spine label, UNCUT (backstrip faded, front hinge cracked, front flyleaves loose); green morocco pull-off case. Provenance: Frank Maier (bookplate); Cortlandt F. Bishop (bookplate; his sale Anderson, 8 April 1938, lot 967). BAL 7570; Clark A1.1.
