Lot Essay

Mahavira was the last of the 24 Jain jinas, born into the warrior nobility in the sixth century. Among the 24 jinas, he is identified by the lion, a symbol of his bravery, which makes his lion throne particularly fitting. The eyes, srivatsa, and diamond lozenges on his cushion are all inlaid with silver, augmenting Mahavira's divine radiance. Compare the silver inlay with a similar figure of Rsabha at the Museum Rietberg (P. Granoff, Victorious Ones: Jain Images of Perfection, Ahmedabad, 2009, pp. 200-201, cat.no. S 21)
