Lot Essay

The painting is in good condition overall. There is some light abrasion of the white pigment above the couple. The white pigment used to paint the cat sitting it on the foreground is slightly oxidised. There is some very light rubbing on the faces of the two female attendants on the left hand side. The lapis lazuli pigment used to paint the carpet beneath the couple is almost completely gone and only a small area of pigment remains on the painting, visible as a blue patch between the gold vessels. The illuminated borders are in good condition with only minor scuffing and tears around the edges.
