One work bound in 2 volumes, 2° (445 x 285mm). 150 engraved plates by Antonio Serantoni, 75 hand-coloured and 75 duplicated in outline with printed annotations. (Vol. 1: small hole to title, scattered spotting and some faint dampstaining; vol. 2: faint spotting to a number of plates, mostly confined to margins, a few leaves closely shaved at top margin.) Contemporary half calf (small hole to lower spine of vol. 1, lightly rubbed at extremities, endpapers renewed). Provenance: contemporary annotation.
Small folio, authorized edition of Mascagni’s great anatomical work Anatomia universa, exemplifying the new free-floating style of anatomical illustration. Prepared by Antonio Serantoni, the designer, engraver and colourist, this edition contains reduced versions of the spectacular plates in the elephant folio edition of 1832.
