REMMELIN, Johann (1583-1632). Catoptrum Microcosmicum, suis aere incisis visionibus splendens, cum historia, et pinace, de novo prodit. Augsburg: David Franck, 1619.
2° (450 x 315mm). Engraved title, engraved author portrait on title verso, 3 full-page engravings by Lucas Kilian and Stephan Michelspacher after Remmelin, with flaps and moveable parts revealing successive layers of human anatomy, some parts engraved recto and verso. D1 with letterpress extension flap. (Title wormed with loss in several areas, rehinged and with several neat repairs, the first engraving of nude male and female with brown spot and closed tear through letterpress along bottom border, the second of nude man with laminated wormtrack near border and several edge tears, the third of nude woman with short marginal tear, no obvious damage to moveable parts, some other text leaves rehinged or repaired, some scattered wormholes and wax stains.) 17th-century Dutch floral paper over old boards (rebacked and recornered with modern paper); modern clamshell cloth case. Provenance: L. and L.B. of Leeds (recent bookplate).
FIRST AUTHORISED EDITION (the first pirated editions had appeared in 1613 and 1614) of this renowned anatomical work, totally original in its extensive use of the ‘flap’ mechanism. Although the three engravings appear in sound condition, we cannot be sure there have been no losses to the many small parts, and the book is therefore sold as viewed, not subject to return. Choulant-Frank, p. 232; Heirs of Hippocrates 456; NLM/Krivatsy 9551; Wellcome I, 5418.
