A CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER ‘BIRDS AND FLOWERS’ DISH
MING DYNASTY, 16TH CENTURY
The shallow circular dish supported on a short foot ring is superbly carved in relief with two birds soaring and plunging amidst peonies in full or partial bloom. The birds with outstretched wings gently incised with delicate lines to depict their feathery bodies and heads. The reverse is thickly carved with a classic scroll border and the base is lacquered dark brown.
