Presidential presentation copy of the official announcement of the discovery of gold in California, inscribed and signed by President Polk on the title: “With the Respects of J.K. Polk.” In part: “The accounts of the abundance of gold in that territory are of such an extraordinary character as would scarcely command belief were they not corroborated by the authentic reports of officers in public service.” Also included in this document is Colonel Richard Mason’s first-hand account of his trip to the newly discovered placers, among the most crucial of 1848 eye-witness accounts.
