Lot Essay

The present watch is a very rare and unusual Lemania chronograph, perhaps made as a prototype for the famous Heuer Aeronautica Militare Italiana (AMI), or Italian Air Force, reference 510.543, which is often called part of the Lemania 1000 series.

There is some speculation as to what LMC on the dial means and it may be the abbreviation for “Leon Military Chronographs S.A.”, a company supposedly linked to Lemania and perhaps seeking to get the contract for the Italian Air Force. The logo is similar to the AMI logo, but slightly different, perhaps as part of a pitch.

Furthermore, the watch features the NATO issue number engraving on the back and "A.M.I.", suggesting it was produced to specification for use by the Italian Air Force.

The watch features the robust Lemania 5100 movement that was so appreciated by the famous chronograph expert Chuck Maddox and that is widely admired for its robust and accurate performance.
