Lot Essay

Considered one the most beautiful chronographs of the mid-20th century, Reference 1463 is Patek Philippe's regular production vintage chronograph model (aside from the 1563) with screw back case and round pushers. This gentleman's sports watch was made in yellow gold, pink gold, and stainless steel. With its masculine case proportions, generous lugs and bezel, and sporty appearance, it is a very popular watch amongst scholars but also a beautiful watch for regular wear, be it casual or formal. Examples like the present one, with such strong case proportions, featuring sharp edges to the bezel, full lugs, and a crisp hallmark, are very rare finds, even more so with the retailer's signature, Hausmann & Co. to the dial.

Hausmann & Co. was founded in Rome in 1794 by Ernst Hausmann, a young German clockmaker and his friend and partner Hermann Frielingsdorf. The firm still resides in the same premises in Rome's historical centre and represents the world's most prestigious watch and clock manufacturers.

Reference 1463 is illustrated in Patek Philippe Wristwatches by M. Huber and A. Banbery, Plate 412, Page 267.
