The Turn-O-Graph model was released at the Basel Fair in 1953, the same year that the present example dates to. The model was fitted with a rotating bezel with five-minute divisions and dot markings, and was referred to as a "time-recording-rim" by Rolex. This model was designed to be used as a simplified chronograph, for timing events up to an hour, and was promoted as being able to calculate the "Timing of a transatlantic telephone call, the rate of a machine, a patient's pulse, the speed of a train, or the development of a film". Preceding the Submariner, the Turn-O-Graph has similar features in a smaller case.
The present watch stands out as one of the first of this model and also for its beautifully aged "waffle" dial that has changed color from black to reveal a golden brown hue, showcasing the gilt dial beneath. Similar to other examples of 1950s Rolex sports watches, this watch has lume on the 6 o’clock marker which is a slightly lighter color, theorized by some so that the wearer could quickly identify the 6 o’clock marker versus the rest of the dial for faster telling of the time. With excellent original examples of early Submariners reaching into the six figures USD in price, Turn-O-Graph reference 6202 examples, such as the present watch, remain relatively undervalued. They are important to the history of Rolex sports watches.
