Lot Essay

Ann Garrould remarks that 'this drawing, peopled with many familiar figures, has a narrative quality very rarely found in Moore's work. The two groups in the foreground seem to be confronting each other, with a crowd in the background looking on. In its disposition of the dramatis personae it is reminiscent of paintings by Giotto' (loc. cit.).
