Lot Essay

The settee likely formed part of a larger suite. A set of fourteen walnut chairs and a stool of this pattern formed part of the celebrated collection of Sir John H. Ward, K.C.V.O. at Dudley House in London (illustrated in H. Cescinsky, 'The Collection of the Hon. Sir John H. Ward, K.C.V.O.', The Connoisseur, March 1921, p.145, no.XIII). The chairs were later sold Christie’s, New York, 19 October 2000, lot 258. A matching stool from the Harvard University Art Museum, sold Christie’s, New York, 21 January 1999, lot 324.
