Lot Essay

The niece of Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827), Sarah Miriam Peale (1800-1885) hailed from early America's foremost family of artists. Her circa 1840 portrait of Mrs. William Crane (Collection, San Diego Museum of Art) displays similarly rendered lace and draped fabric.
