Lot Essay

The present work derives from a painting of about 1605 that Ertz suggests was a collaborative effort between Breughel, who provided the landscape, and Hendrick van Balen and Denis van Alsloot, whom Ertz believes painted the figure of Orpheus and the animals, respectively (K. Ertz and C. Nitze-Ertz, Jan Brueghel der Ältere (1568-1625): Kritischer Katalog der Gemälde, Lingen, 2008, II, pp. 766-67, no. 380).
